VR Solar System Building Simulator - Unity

CRITICAL GAME DESIGN PROJECT - 5 WEEKS

What I did

  • Overview​

    • Developed in association with Liminal VR - located in Abbotsford, Victoria, Australia

    • Delivered weekly production updates to Liminal VR CEO Damian Moratti via teleconference

  • Design

    • Collaborated with designers during the concept and prototyping phase to develop the "build your own solar system" experience​

  • Art

    • Made 3D models for the planets, rings and asteroids

    • Created UV and normal maps for the planets

    • Made HDRI sky box with a light-emitting nebula

CHALLENGE POINT

First time developing for VR

  • Problem​

    • Technical limitations of the Oculus Go

    • Creating the solar system was limited by the Go's 'far clip plane'

  • Solution

    • Rapid experimentation to figure out the limits of the 'far clip plane'

  • Outcome

    • The solar system became limited to five planets

FUN FACT

Liminal VR was so impressed with our prototype delivery that they selected it for publishing and have invested money into improving the assets and UI elements we originally designed
